Aloha! Thank you for visiting our website.
Our kumu, Ku‘uiponani Avilla, formed the hālau in January of 2003. The hālau name means "the adornment placed at the cliff," a poetic reference to Diana ‘Eonopua Nu‘uhiwa Avilla, who is the mother of our kumu.
At our practices, we learn many of the same dances that our kumu learned from her past hula instructors. Kumu has been a student of many great kumu hula and is very grateful to every single one of them for sharing their knowledge of the hula with her.
We have performed at various community events, family gatherings, and some hula competitions. Our long-term goal is to (hopefully) someday participate in the Merrie Monarch Hula Competition in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Kumu had a chance to be a dancer in this competition (a LONG, LONG time ago!) and she wants her students to have the same opportunity. If we are ever selected to be in the competition, it will be both an honor and a huge responsibility for all of us dancers.
Again, thank you for taking time to read about our hālau hula.
Mālama Pono!
